Residents at Somerford Assisted Living recently undertook their annual project and made treats for the cats at the Humane Society of Washington County.

On Dec. 9, some of the residents delivered the treats to the shelter.

"Everyone loves to get involved with this project," said Caroline Dunning, programming assistant at Somerford Assisted Living. "We grow the catnip in the garden and then cut out the fabric and sew the mice-shaped toys together."

All of the effort was well worth it when the cats began to play with the gifts.

"It is obvious the treats delight the cats," said Paul Miller, executive director of the shelter. "I am not sure who appreciates all of the Somerford residents' hard work, us or the cats."

Somerford is at 10116 Sharpsburg Pike.

The Humane Society is at 13011 Maugansville Road in Hagerstown. Call 301-733-2060 or go to for information on animal-related issues, directions to the shelter and information about programs and services.
