Mail Call - Dec. 15

December 15, 2011

“This is a reply to the animal lover in Clear Spring. I’m also an animal lover, and spend considerable money on food for birds and wild animals. I also am a meat eater, who takes two deer each year as my meat supply. Are you a vegan? If not, where does your meat come from, the supermarket? There was a time when the hunter was a necessary and respected member of the community. Considering our current situation, that time might come again.”

— Indian Springs

“I want to thank President Obama for letting my granddaughter come home from Iraq from her third tour. I give him a lot of credit.”

— Hagerstown

“It was a really nice picture in Saturday’s paper about the Christmas lights being lit in City Park, but Mayor Bruchey looked like he was lit also.”

— Hagerstown

“This is a comment to the PETA protesters at The Maryland Theatre protesting. People have been wearing animal fur since the beginning of time, the cavemen, the Indians, the settlers, and anyone who wants to wear one now. You people need to find something constructive to do. I’m sure you carry leather purses, wear leather boots and shoes, etc., so don’t be so hypocritical, and try to find a way to help homeless kids, handicapped kids, kids with cancer, etc., instead of worrying about animals which were put on earth for man to eat, wear, have them work, etc. And are you all true vegans and use no animal products whatsoever?”

— Hagerstown

“Let me see, I believe Hagerstown has one of its own representing Miss Maryland in the Miss America pageant in January. Did I miss seeing a picture of her in The Herald-Mail, from her send-off event held at The Maryland Theatre on Sunday?”

— Hagerstown

“My mailbox was broken by the snow, and I had an old one I had to put up that needed repainting. A nice lady came to buy a Santa Claus I had advertised, and she brought along paint, and she sanded my mailbox and painted it, and she was so nice, and she was an angel in disguise. She helps the elderly people and other people, too. Thanks.”

— Mount Lena

“This goes out to the Ravens fan in Hagerstown. The definition of the 35-7 thump that you gave us back in September, that’s your Super Bowl. You won’t be nowhere near us when we’re in Indianapolis in February. Go, Steelers.”

— Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

“You know, I was listening to Romney, Willard Romney — they say his first name’s Willard, I don’t know — he was mentioning about Obama bringing the troops home. He thought that was terrible, that he should listen to the generals and do what they tell him to do. Well, you know, like I said before, if you listen to generals, you’d be fighting a war all the time. But he’s got five sons. Guess where they’re at? Home.”

— Hagerstown

“I have no problem seeing pictures of hunters with deer that they have harvested. Everyone knows there is an overabundance of deer, and the ones that are harvested by hunters are either donated to feed the hungry, or used to put meat on the family’s table.”

— Boonsboro

“Thanks, Herald-Mail, for the extensive coverage of the Middletown High School state football championship. What are they, 15 miles from Hagerstown?”

— Keedysville

“I’d just like to take the time to say Merry Christmas, God is good, and if this offends anybody, too bad.”

— Martinsburg, W.Va.

“This is regard to the call-in on Tuesday’s paper, Dec. 6, about the person that’s complaining about the Republicans taking control of the House of Representatives. First of all, the Republicans were not seated into the House until 2011, which is the current year, so they haven’t had that much time to pass bills. Second of all, the Democrats still control the Senate, which vetoes the bills, and most likely Harry Reid’s not even allowed them on the floor, according to believing what the liberal news media said.”

— Hagerstown

“I’ve been a subscriber to The Herald-Mail for many years, and seriously considering not renewing my subscription, due to their cutting of the comics. If they have not enough room in the paper, why don’t we cut out all these ridiculous comments about the Steelers, and about the left-wing loonies, out of the paper? That’ll leave plenty of room for comics. Nobody cares about ... or anything in this town that has two cents worth of intelligence. We waste half the paper talking about it.”

— Hagerstown

“This is on the budget cuts and everything that the federal government wants. The one thing, this cutting Social Security is getting old. I don’t know why they keep wanting to cut Social Security. They need to cut this welfare program out. I mean, a person’s got to go to work, they gotta take a drug test and everything, but people on welfare, they don’t have to take a drug test, and get tax-free money. I think it’s ridiculous, and the politicians ought to be ashamed. It’s time ... we the people need to wake up and force these people. They need to take a drug test.”

— Hagerstown

“This is for the reader who never reads the comics in the paper. I never read the sports page. If you’re interested in sports, watch them on TV. The comics are the best part of the paper. They are funny and entertaining, which is more than I can say about the sports section.”

— Hagerstown
