Elmer Richard Smith, 91, of Hagerstown, died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2011 at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Nov. 4, 1920, in Washington County, Md., he was the son of the late Daniel Edward and Daisy Ellen Forrest Smith.

He was a member of Morris Frock American Legion Post 42, and Greencastle Sportsman's Club.

He loved to hunt and fish, and loved to tinker and was able to fix anything.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Colleen Smith; one son, Marvin R. "Buck" Smith and wife, Carolyn, of Hagerstown; one grandson, Tyson J. Smith and wife, Joyce, of Hagerstown; step-grandson, Tim Barnes of State Line, Pa.; step-great-grandsons Robert Barnes, Jeffrey Barnes, Joseph Wolfe, and Blake Vanes; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Adam Smith and two sisters, Ida Smith and Nellie Blanche Smith.

The funeral service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. Eric Henderson will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by Washington County AMVETS Post 10 and Marine Corps League of Hagerstown.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m.
