MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A 20-year-old Hampshire County man died and a Gerrardstown, W.Va., teen was injured early Tuesday when the car they were traveling in crashed along Apple Harvest Drive in Berkeley County, West Virginia State said.

Eric Lee Payne of Yellow Spring, W.Va., was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which troopers responded to at about 2:30 a.m., according to a news release from state police Sgt. J.D. Burkhart.

Payne, who was partially ejected from the four-door Honda passenger car he was driving, died from injuries he received in the crash, which happened in the 9500 block of Apple Harvest Drive, also known as W.Va. 45, police sad.

William Delbert McCain III, 17, who was thrown from the vehicle and found on the north shoulder of Apple Harvest Drive, was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., for treatment, police said. McCain's medical condition was not immediately known.

Based on a preliminary investigation led by Trooper J.D. Schuessler, police determined Payne apparently lost control of the car while driving east. The vehicle crossed the westbound lane and went off the north side of the road, struck an embankment, overturned several times and ultimately came to rest on its roof in the eastbound lane, police said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash can contact Schuessler at the state police Martinsburg Detachment at 304-267-0001.
