Robert Eugene Wertz, 76, of Hagerstown, passed away Monday, Nov. 28, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

Born April 7, 1935, in Jamaica, N.Y., he was the son of the late Wilfred Wertz and the late Florence (Freedell) Wertz.

He joined the U.S. Air Force and served from 1958 to 1962, being honorably discharged at the rank of staff sergeant. Upon discharge from the Air Force, he pursued a career in the electronic technology field. In 1976, he was certified as a "special deputy" and worked protective services at Weinschel Engineering properties. In 1992, he joined the Knight Protective Service and worked protective services at the Naval Service Air Warfare Center until 2002, when he retired at the rank of captain.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Sherry Malcomb Wertz; daughters, Regina M. Custer and husband, Al, of Bishopville, Md., Deanna M. Turner, Germantown, Md., Pamela M. Nisson and husband, Paul, of Haymarket, Va., and Monica M. Martin and husband, Lloyd, of Ocean City, Md.; sons, Robert E. Wertz Jr. and late wife, Kimberly, of Hagerstown, Md., and Michael E. Wertz of Germantown; sister, Barbara Wertz Figueroa and husband, Carlos, Greenwood, Ind.; stepsons, Charles R. Dennis, Boyd, Md., and William J. Dennis, Frederick, Md.; and 18 grandchildren.

Robert graciously donated his remains to the University of Maryland hospital for further research into Parkinson's disease.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at 1 p.m. at Salem Reformed Church, 13182 Salem Church Road, Hagerstown, with Pastor Stephen Wagoner officiating.
