Smithsburg Middle School Gives Back is part of the new Leopard time extension period built into the school day.

Under the supervision of school secretaries Patti Martin and Vicki Reed, the group of 62 students made 24 fleece tie blankets to be presented to various community facilities, created approximately 40 holiday cards to send to servicemen and servicewomen, and made 15 fleece scarves for the residents of Holly Place in Hagerstown.

The group plans to visit Holly Place this month to decorate cookies with the residents, and also to present scarves and personal-care kits.

The project also sponsors four backpacks for the Micah’s Backpack project.

Students are responsible for collecting food, developing menus, setting up an organized food pantry, keeping an inventory and packing the backpacks every week.
