CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — The Greater Chambersburg Chamber of Commerce named Edwin D. Martin the 2011 Business Person of the Year at the chamber's annual business breakfast this week.

Martin is part owner and president of David H. Martin Excavating Inc. of Chambersburg and has played an active part in the business for 42 years.

He was chosen for the honor because of his business and charitable contributions to the community, according to a news release.

Martin received the award from Suzanne Miller Trinh, 2011 chairwoman of the chamber's board of directors, during a breakfast Thursday at Wilson College in Chambersburg attended by 240 chamber members.

Edwin's father, David H. Martin, started the excavating company in 1968 with one dump truck and one backhoe.

The company, which currently employs 200 people,  has a fleet of dump trucks and excavation equipment that provide excavation and utility services to private and public residential, industrial, and commercial clients in Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia.

In its utility work, the company installs about 250,000 feet of water and sewer lines annually. It installs stormwater systems in 12-inch plastic to 60-inch concrete pipes.

The company also owns and operates five shale quarries to supply its daily construction needs.

Edwin Martin is the vice-chairman of the Chambersburg Area Development Corp.
