Mail Call - Dec. 8

December 07, 2011

"I went to a local card shop today, and they didn't have the item that I was looking for, and they actually got in the phone book and looked up the other card shops in town, and called them and found the item that I was looking for. Miracle on 34th Street. Way to go. Happy Holidays."
— Hagerstown

"Attention, taxpayers: Don't you think (in) Washington County and the Maryland, the post office department is taking and wasting our money? They're hauling mail from Hancock clear to Baltimore to have it postmarked, then they're hauling it all the way back to deliver it, and we have 13 post offices in the Washington County area. Why can't they do the mail? I mean, what are they there for? If they're going to do this, then let them close all the post offices ... that's what they're doing. This is your government for you. Boy, they take it and take it and take it, but they never give you anything back."
— Clear Spring

"If you see a car heading toward you and turning their headlights off and on, they may be trying to remind you that you need to turn on your headlights."
— Washington County

"I just would like to respond to the individual who wrote in the paper on Wednesday about global warming, that they questioned whether God had everything under control. Yes, God, rest assured, does have everything under control. Apparently, that person doesn't know much about God, because He knows everything from beginning to the end. In fact, He knew He were going to be born, thousands of years ago. That's how great our God is. So yes, He does have everything in control. No matter what we do, we're not going to prevent the end."

"This is on two items. This is from a person from Hagerstown, about the unions. They work 20 years — and that's not including  military — but they work 20 years and get paid for the rest of their life. Well, the federal government people, they work that. The politicians can work four years, they get paid insurance, retirement and everything, and still make the same ... and this is on a guy, a person from Chambersburg, agreeing with the — about the politicians agreeing, Republicans agreeing never to raise taxes. We don't need to raise taxes. Quit spending."
— Hagerstown

"I was just calling in reference to the huge Christmas trees that are cut down for the White House, for New York, up at the NBC building, and I just don't understand why they have to destroy these beautiful old trees, and then the first week of January, they'll basically be firewood. It's very sad. And my last statement is, I would like to see The Herald-Mail limit or even do away with the comics actually. I don't believe that it's a necessity to print comics in the newspaper. The newspaper's for news, not funnies."
— Hagerstown

"Waynesboro caller, you claim the Occupy Wall Street protesters are merely exercising their constitutional rights, and we tea partiers are hypocrites for not defending them. Wrong on both counts. The Constitution — you should actually read it — guarantees the right to freedom of speech, and to assemble peaceably — note, peaceably — and to petition for redress of grievances, not to defecate on police cars and in public, destroy private property, occupy and trash public spaces, thus violating the equal rights of other citizens."
— Frederick, Md.

"If memory serves me right, there was an article in the paper about license plates on Maryland automobiles. If I remember correctly, 20 years ago the Maryland State Police objected to Maryland going to one license plate, on the rear. So that's the reason that we have two license plates, even though all the states around us only have one."
