Mail Call - Dec. 5

December 05, 2011

“I’ve been reading about the University of Maryland cutting out the lesser-known sports programs, just to save money. Well, if I were the parents of those students that were participating in these lesser-known sports, I would say, hey, what do we need all these cheerleaders for, for the basketball team and the football team, and the big moneymaking sports events? I always thought cheerleaders were a waste of time and money. ... Cut that money out.”

— Hagerstown

“This call is pertaining to the University of Maryland football team. To our athletic director, thanks a lot. Thanks for Randy Edsall. You went from vanilla to storebrand vanilla. That is the worst-coached team I have ever seen in all the years of watching Maryland football. Just pitiful. Leading North Carolina State 41-14, and losing. And to think we passed up Mike Leach. What could’ve been. Sad.”

— Hagerstown

“This is on bonuses for city employees. It’s a good thing to give bonuses out to city employees, but, you know, I don’t want to hear nothing about they haven’t got a raise or nothing so this many years and all. People on Social Security and these old people out here starving to death can’t afford to heat their house because they can’t get a pay raise, and every time they get a raise on Social Security, they raise something else to take it back from them. So I don’t feel sorry for the city workers. You got too many city workers. I think they need to cut some more. You could take that $444,000 that you give bonuses out here to these city workers, because they, you got rid of a couple people and they gotta work a little bit harder.”

— Hagerstown

“Most know when deer season opens in Maryland — not good news for animal lovers like myself. I know hunters hunt because it is something they enjoy, but as one of many animal lovers, I cannot understand why The Herald-Mail continually publishes pictures of dead deer. These beautiful animals are dead. Knowing that is bad enough. Seeing it in color pictures is even worse. Come on, Herald-Mail, enough of dead deer pictures. Have a heart.”

“I was wondering where you can turn in some eyeglasses. I never see the boxes anymore.”

“The bonuses awarded to the city employees is yet another example of poor fiscal responsibility. I appreciate the work that they do, but given the times, again, this was just poor fiscal responsibility.”

— Smithsburg

“I’m very thankful I can use this small piece of paper to tell Anthony Holmes the goodness he is doing there in Hagerstown. I enjoyed reading about him in the newspaper. He’s with the Cub Scouts. We never seem to have enough dedicated leaders for our young people. The moral shape the world is in today, this is so badly needed. I’m 80 years old ... most boys went on to do Boy Scouts. Thank you for being so good to the young people.”

— Hancock
