Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down - Dec. 3

Thumbs up to 9-year-old Brandon Fink of Smithsburg, who will compete Sunday in the NFL's Punt, Pass & Kick competiton during halftime of the Washington Redskins game at FedEx Field. Brandon won local and sectional competitions to qualify for Sunday's event, where he hopes to post a score high enough to advance to the national finals in January.

Thumbs up to the more than 1,000 participants in the Turkey Trot at Hagerstown Community College on Thanksgiving Day. The event, which began in 2001 with about 100 runners, raises money for student athletic scholarships at the college and collects canned goods for Washington County Food Resources.

Thumbs up to four Washington County middle school students who recently received Meritorious Youth awards from the Washington County Board of Commissioners. Catherine Hawfield, Anna Gerringer, Elizabeth Mott and Collin Willhite were recognized for academic success and leadership in community activities.

Thumbs down to the person or people who stole about 20 Christmas trees from a stand in Laconia, N.H., on Thanksgiving Day. The stand's owner said the stolen trees were his biggest and best balsam and Frazier firs, worth about $50 each.
