Mail Call - Dec. 2

December 02, 2011

“I’m sitting here reading the Daily Mail paper today. I see where the city’s going to vote on Pangborn property. That would make a wonderful place for the senior citizens’ building, to build there, so why can’t the city and the county get together and put one in there at that nice little park and the little pond over there? Make a good place, and you got plenty of parking spots. Wouldn’t interfere that much with the traffic.”

“To the Hagerstown caller: Please check your facts so you can talk intelligently about issues. The unemployment rate in January 2008, the month Mr. Obama took office, was 4.9 percent. It has been rising ever since, and is now 9.1 percent.”

— Boonsboro

“This is about the U.S. mail delivery. I don’t mind getting it three or four hours later than I used to get it. My problem is getting things, coupons or magazines, that are outdated by the time I got it. I got a letter today that said ‘Please deliver prior to 11/4,’ which would be 19 days ago. Took 19 days to get that piece of mail to me, late. This is what upsets me about receiving mail. It’s not that it’s three or four hours later in the afternoon.”

“This is in response to the person who was asking about calico cats being female. Calico cats are 98 percent female, but they can be male. If you have a male calico, it is usually sterile.”

— Hagerstown

“I’d like to thank Mr. Waters for his Sunday excerpts in the paper. They’re meaningful, they have a very good spirit behind them. I guess I just can’t find enough adjectives to describe how good he writes. Everything is very interesting. Good job, Mr. Waters.”

“All of us change our minds at one time or another, but Mitt Romney has shown repeatedly that he has absolutely no core values. He will change his opinion on absolutely anything, to say what he thinks people want to hear at that moment.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“This is for the caller who wanted the number for the Do Not Call list. The number is 1-800-382-1222.”

“This is in response to the article that was in Mail Call on Thursday morning, about the downtown area. I worked at Eyerly’s many, many, many years ago, and our Fridays and Mondays were — the sidewalks were filled with people shopping. Again, I think they need to go back to, as that article stated, some stores that people can afford. I don’t know where the people at Alexander House and ... we need to do something with our downtown. The mall has everything, and not everybody has a car or transportation to get to the malls.”

— Hagerstown

“This is on entitlements. I don’t know why the Democrats and Republicans always want to cut Social Security now, Medicare and Medicaid. They’re not entitlements. It’s something that people paid into. They paid into that off of their paychecks. Entitlements are welfare, food stamps, anything like that. That’s entitlements, something that you get for nothing ... And I don’t know why the Democrats don’t want to drill oil out down through the U.S. and help the gasoline and oil prices, as long as we keep it and refine it here in the U.S. This supply and demand is getting to be a crock.”

— Hagerstown
