Mail Call - Dec. 1

December 01, 2011

“Is it no surprise that 58 of the 70 tickets written for drivers passing stopped school buses occurred on Maugans Avenue? These drivers, on the same road, continue on to Longmeadow Road, where the speed limit is 35, but their speed is anywhere from 55 to 80 mph. This is east and west, and not occasionally, but daily ... in our residential neighborhood. We certainly appreciate it, especially nabbing those commercial drivers who totally ignore the speed limit.”

“I’m calling in response to the caller from Hagerstown who keeps complaining that Bill Clinton could have gotten Osama bin Laden. Even if he did get Osama bin Laden, 9/11 still would have happened. They have second and third and fourth people in control of al-Qaida. That’s why we keep getting the No. 2 and No. 3 guy. So no matter what Bill Clinton did, 9/11 would have happened under George Bush. That’s the end of the story, I don’t care what he says.”

“I would like to thank Art Callaham for being the guest speaker at Marty Snook Park on Veterans Day. Also, a thank you to (the young lady) ... for the Barbara Ingram School for the Arts, for singing the national anthem. A thank you to all others who participated in the program, on behalf of the Joint Veterans Council.”

“Why do our Maryland leaders always have to stick it to us? More in gas tax, higher emissions fees, 50 percent increase in vehicle registration. Why don’t they give up anything? Why do they get to have the best when they go to Annapolis; best rooms, live entertainment, $46 a day to eat? I got $3 a day to eat. Start taking from them. Our unemployment and Social Security don’t go as far as what they make.”

— Clear Spring

“Fix the U.S. budget. Cut out Saturday mail delivery, and cut every government employee’s pay by 20 percent, from the president down to janitors, and do not touch Social Security. And work a full eight hours on Friday.”

“Leave all your prescription containers off at 21112 Leiters Mill Road, one mile west of Leitersburg. Please remove all labels. They will be given to Christian Aid Ministries, and sent overseas to reuse at their clinics.”

“OK, Herald-Mail, Tuesday, Nov. 22. Get the dead deer out of your paper. I for one think they’re offensive, and I don’t want to see them. Who cares who killed what deer? I think it’s totally wrong that you show these pictures in the paper.”

“I’m listening to Romney on that debate about the Afghanistan troops, bringing them home. President Obama wants to bring them home. If he says water, he’d say coal, so it wouldn’t matter. But he says that they should keep the troops in Afghanistan and listen to the generals. Well, if you listened to them, you’d be in a war all the time. Just ask Truman, when MacArthur wanted to go into China, and Patton, after World War II, wanted to go into Russia. So they’d have you fighting all the time, which that’s the case now, really.”

— Hagerstown

“Getting rid of Gadhafi and Saddam Hussein, both of whom served as a counter-balance to Iran, was a major strategic blunder. The driving force in the region is Islamic eschatology, along with the emergence of Turkey as a regional superpower. Supplying arms to the Arab world only compounds the problem.”

— Hagerstown

“(My wife and I) wish to express (our) grateful thanks to the daughter and father who performed the Heimlich maneuver for me on Nov. 22. The manager and employees of the ... restaurant were prompt and concerned (for) our distress. What a happy Thanksgiving for us.”
