Hawks bounce back against Harford

Hagerstown Community College Hawks coach Marlys Palmer is in the early stages of her 33rd year at the helm of the women’s basketball team.

During that period of time, she has found ways to win many basketball games.

After HCC suffered a disappointing 57-52 loss at home to Montgomery-Rockville on Monday night, Palmer knew what adjustments had to be made.

The Hawks responded with a 74-47 win over the Harford Fighting Owls on Wednesday night in a Maryland JUCO Conference game at the HCC athletic complex.

“We did what we wanted to do as far as controlling the boards,” Palmer said. “It was the best team effort that we have had all season. We had 28 points off of the bench tonight. We wanted to set the tone on defense and I think we did that. On Monday, we came out flat. But we came out pumped and ready to play tonight.”

HCC (6-1, 1-1) outrebounded Harford (4-5, 0-3) by a whopping margin of 49-27.

Sophomore point guard Sunny Flores Conway came through with game-high totals of 18 points and five assists to go along with seven rebounds for HCC. Sophomore center Yolonda Pinkcett grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with 14 points and four assists for the Hawks.

“Our coach said that other teams are going to run a triangle-and-two around Yolonda and me,” Conway said. “That means that everybody on our team has to step it up. We were able to do that tonight.”

HCC led 37-22 at halftime.

“It felt good that our team was able to take control early,” Conway said. “Everybody worked hard in practice yesterday to prepare for tonight’s game. We came out really hard. We weren’t going to lose this game. We got a big lead early because of our intensity. Everybody contributed in some way.”

Ashley Smothers scored 12 points, Jasmine Reynolds dished off four assists and Sabrina Cue had five rebounds for HCC.

Kam Owens came off of the bench to score 14 points and Shelby Key made four steals for Harford.
