HCC stuffs Owls

HAGERSTOWN — The Hagerstown Community College men’s basketball team found out once again that the best way to win is to follow the Chisholm Trail.

Like Old West cowboys, the Hawks found themselves in a shootout with Harford Community College on Wednesday. In the final flurry, HCC turned to Alister Chisholm to lead the way.

Chisholm scored 12 points in the final 12 minutes — including three on a key six-point possession with 2:04 remaining — to help the Hawks survive in a 106-103 win over the Owls in a Maryland JuCo Conference game at the HCC athletic complex.

“When it came down to win the ball game, the play came down to Alister,” said HCC coach Barry Brown. “What can you say? He seems to do it all the time. His presence was huge at the end of the game.”

Harford (1-8) spent most of the second half fighting back from a nine-point deficit before finally catching HCC at 91-91 with 6:22 remaining on a pair of Dimitrious Jalen-Joy free throws. The two teams battled to ties at 93, 95 and 97 until Chisholm made the decisive play.

With Harford leading 99-97 with 2:10 remaining, Chisholm challenged the Owls Dwayne McGill at the top of the foul circle and stole the ball.

He drove the length of the floor for the score to tie the score and was intentionally fouled by McGill on the play.

Chisholm hit the second of two foul shots and HCC (7-1, 3-0) was awarded the ball, which turned into a 3-pointer from the corner from Jerel Carter to give the Hawks a 103-99 lead. The Hawks were able to hold off Harford the rest of the way to keep the lead and get the win.

“This team just keeps showing the ability to win,” said Brown. “During this whole game, I kept telling myself that we had to be patient. We had to be patient today because we were not all here.”

HCC played without Devin Miller, one of the team’s leading scorers, who was sidelined by coach’s decision with a sore knee.

“He could of played, but I held him out,” Brown said.

Raymar Watson and Antonio Jenifer led the Hawks with 24 points each while Chisholm added 18. Jalen-Joy led Harford with 25.
