Mail Call - Nov. 28

November 28, 2011

“To the Smithsburg caller: They’re not little yellow flags, they’re Terrible Towels. And don’t you remember when we lent them to you a few years ago, when we thumped you three times in one year? Good luck. Go, Steelers.”

— Hancock

“When is the winner for the Little League Lineup Contest that was online going to be announced? It stated that the winner will be chosen after the season by the sports department. Did I miss it already, or haven’t they announced it yet?”

— Hagerstown

“It is very disturbing to read about deadly accidents that occur because a vehicle crossed the center line for unknown reasons and crashed head-on into the oncoming vehicle. Are we not allowed to name the reasons why, when it is obvious the driver did not pay attention when he or she crossed the center line? I’m a professional driver, and witness it every day, that people are leaving the lane they are traveling in.”

— Clear Spring

“The city wants to raise the rates at the golf course, to make them comparable to the rates at other area courses. They ought to make the course itself comparable to others, by getting a real greenskeeper. Besides, they only have five of the nine original holes. The rest are chopped up.”

— Hagerstown

“Why must we start advertising ‘commercial Christmas’ before celebrating Thanksgiving? We really have our priorities in the wrong place.”

— Hagerstown

“While in the days of gerrymandering congressional districts, I hope The Herald-Mail is not in duplicity, in conspiracy with Montgomery County, by showing such editorials as that written by Tom Israel, who’s the executive director of the teachers union in Montgomery County, in today’s paper, which happens to be Nov. 18. I think we are ideologically opposed to much of the decisions that happened in that part of the state, having lived there myself ... forcing down the minds and throats of Washington County readers, this more liberal diatribe that comes out of that part of the state.”

— Hagerstown

“Please put in the daily Mail Call, I’m desperately in need of that ‘don’t call’ phone number. I’m getting this unknown caller to my home about 15 times a day at least, and no one answers when I answer the phone. Please, does someone have that number to block these calls? I’ve tried the phone company, with no luck.”

— Hagerstown

“Concerning the caller who was asking about checking with our delegates to see how they voted on the redistricting of Gov. O’Malley’s congressional plan, one doesn’t have to figure out very hard how John Donoghue voted. He’s O’Malley’s No. 1 cheerleader and a total yes man.”

— Hagerstown

“Did you see the look on Grover Norquist’s face when he was talking to some of them ... that want the Congress to pay higher taxes? He looked like a lost puppy. What’s it called when everybody follows a man and it’s, he’s not elected? Dictatorship, right? These are elected officials who signed a piece of paper that said they won’t help their country. You Republicans are always hollering about socialism. Well, isn’t that exactly what you’re doing, when you sign a piece of paper saying ‘I will not raise taxes on anyone’? That’s dictatorship.”

— Hagerstown

“People in these car crashes when the people are crossing the center line, they need to check their cellphones. I’m sure the cellphones can tell you, show you whether or not they were on the phone or not at the time of the crash, because I think that’s what a lot of this is, with these people crossing the center lines.”

— Hancock

“I don’t think the town of Funkstown needs to buy a new pickup truck. I have a vehicle older than 1997, and I have it repaired every time there’s a problem, so Funkstown doesn’t need another one. We have high enough taxes here and we don’t need to raise them due to obtaining something that’s not necessary.”

— Funkstown

“This call concerns plumbers. I hired a plumber to do some work for me. He sent two people to do a job that only one did the work while the other one watched, and I got charged for two men. So be careful when you hire somebody. Know who you’re hiring.”

— Hagerstown

“If this present group of candidates is the best the Republican Party has to offer, they are headed the way of the dodo bird and the passenger pigeon.”

— Waynesboro, Pa.

“OK, I’m sitting here, and once again I have a brainstorm. Here’s the idea: Eliminate all pay for elected officials, and all their pension and benefits. Just eliminate them. Get rid of them. Get some real patriots in there who believe in freedom and liberty, and not tax-and-spend, and eliminate the tax-and-spend, the tax-and-spend of the liberal Democrats, OK?”

— Sharpsburg

“What a beautiful sight. I’m sitting here watching this JFK race that just begun, and such a cold morning, at 32 degrees. What great people these are. They’re very cordial, they’re not interfering with the traffic at all. And I’ve never seen such great, great groups of them. They’re even in bunches as they run. So I just want to commend everybody who has ever run.”

— Boonsboro

“I agree with the writer from Hagerstown in ... Friday’s newspaper, where they’re asking for shelter during the day for the homeless. It’s cold out there during the day, too. They need some place to go, to get in where it’s warm.”

— Hagerstown

“I was a state employee for over 30 years, and every time we received a raise as correctional officers, all our benefits went up that we paid for. All our health benefits increased, which wiped out our raise. This went on for over 30 years. Now I’ve been retired for a couple years, I got my first COLA, and everything went up for that. So you just, sometimes you don’t even come out even. Now Social Security has provided an increase, and the seniors and the disabled and all were looking forward to that, but it’s already been wiped out, with health care benefits going up. This is ridiculous.”

— Hagerstown

“Please put this in. You know, there is no better way to smile, when our teams from the Tri-State area play the big-city teams and win. The Frederick/Hagerstown areas, the three Eastern Panhandle teams in West Virginia, and also the Frederick ... Loudoun County and Warren County teams in Virginia. They always play a lot of times in the city boys’ backyards, but we come out winners, which is terrific.”

— Charles Town, W.Va.

“My wife, son and I attended a Veterans Day assembly at Clear Spring High School. What a wonderful, moving performance that was displayed. Don’t change a thing. My family and I have attended these performances for the past three years. I’d like to comment on the students themselves ... good show, no clowning around, no talking during the performance. Thank you. Next time perhaps we could have some military recruiters after the performance, handing out applications and talking about the many options for some of our students.”

— Clear Spring

“I want to thank The Herald-Mail for its coverage of the JFK (50 Mile) ultramarathon every year. This is a world-class event, with world-class athletes. ... Thanks again, Herald-Mail.”
