NEW MARKET, Md. — Two people were killed and eight others were injured early Saturday in a six-vehicle crash on Interstate 70 near New Market, according to a news release from Maryland State Police in Frederick, Md.

Selly Tle Sin Kai, 33, and Anis Mawi, 46, both of Frederick, died in the crash, troopers said.

Sin Kai and Mawi were rear-seat passengers in a Toyota Corolla that was occupied by a total of five people. Neither Mawi nor Sin Kai were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, troopers said.

Those injured in the crash were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital or Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown.

The accident occurred Saturday just before 5 a.m. Traffic on eastbound I-70 was stopped due to an unrelated incident several miles ahead at the New Market scale house, troopers said.

The collision occurred as the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet 3500 van failed to control his speed and struck the rear of a Toyota Corolla, forcing it to spin out of control into the median, troopers said.

The crash caused a chain reaction involving four other vehicles whose drivers were attempting to stop behind the Toyota Corolla, troopers said.

Eastbound I-70 was reopened to traffic at 10:30 a.m.

An investigation into the cause of the crash was continuing.
