Franklin County, Pa., man escapes with minor burns from fire at Guilford Township home

November 26, 2011

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A Franklin County, Pa., man who was sleeping Saturday when a fire started in his home managed to escape with only minor burns to his feet, New Franklin Fire Department Chief Ralph Yeager said.

The man, who was not identified, refused treatment after firefighters from several departments responded to the blaze at 3146 Springview Drive in Guilford Township, Pa., Yeager said.

Dispatched to the fire at 5:21 p.m., Yeager said the one-story, wood-frame home could be repaired, but the blaze caused significant damage.

The fire appeared to start in the kitchen, but the actual cause is undetermined and still under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's office, Yeager said.

Though the fire damage was mostly contained to the first floor, there was some down a stairway that leads to a full basement, Yeager said.

The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the man. Yeager said he believed the victim's daughter also resided at the home.

No one other than the man was in the home at the time of the fire, Yeager said.

The home was in an area that did not have hydrants.

Firefighters from Franklin, Fayetteville, Marion, Mont Alto, Buchanan Valley, Greencastle and Friendship fire departments also responded to the fire, Yeager said.

The Franklin County Air Unit also responded, Yeager said.
