HAGERSTOWN — Four people, including a Hagerstown man, have been charged in a two-county drug investigation that involved more than 3,000 grams of cocaine and nearly $40,000 in cash, police said Wednesday.

Geoffrey Roderick Venkus, of Hagerstown, was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of paraphernalia, according to a Frederick County Narcotics Task Force news release.

Police armed with a warrant on Monday searched a hotel room where Venkus was staying in the Buckeystown Pike area of Frederick and found 700 grams of cocaine, a small amount of marijuana and $12,385, the release said.

A woman who was with Venkus, Akeilah Onye Harris of Orlando, Fla., also was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of cocaine, possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of paraphernalia, the release said.

At the same time as the hotel search, officers searched 60 E. Washington St. in Hagerstown and found two handguns, about 30 grams of cocaine and more than $16,000 in cash, according to police.

David Lamont Barnes, of Frederick, was arrested and taken to Washington County Central Booking, where he was charged with possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession of cocaine, possession of paraphernalia, common nuisance — controlled dangerous substance distribution, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, possession of a firearm during a drug-trafficking crime, and controlled dangerous substance — possession of firearms, the release said.

Barnes was released Tuesday after posting a $3,000 bond, a deputy at the jail said.

The probe started when the Frederick County Narcotics Task Force searched an apartment complex off Key Parkway in Frederick on Sept. 12, the release said.

During the search, police found about 375 grams of powder cocaine, a handgun and $530. The search of the apartment complex also led to a two-month investigation targeting alleged drug dealing in the region, the release said.

On Monday, Eric Arnette Smith of New York was arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near Frederick, the release said.

After Smith's arrest, police searched a Hagerstown address and found about 2,600 grams of cocaine and $10,150 in cash, the release said. Police did not release the address where the search was conducted.

Smith was charged with two counts of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, two counts of possession of cocaine, felon in possession of a handgun and two counts of possession of paraphernalia, the release said.

Information that led to Venkus' arrest was obtained from a confidential source, police said.
