Mail Call - Nov. 25

November 24, 2011

“To the guy from Hagerstown who was in Mail Call today saying that Flacco’s a good quarterback: Well, how come he (lost) to Tennessee, Jacksonville and Seattle? An average quarterback would lose to teams like that after a big win, but a good or a great quarterback never would.”
— Halfway

“In regards to the Lincoln, Cadillac being driven by a police officer, you know that could have possibly been a car that was taken from a drug dealer. So if the police want to use that, I think it’s all right. And last but not least, let’s get some police officers downtown where you can see them, and put the firemen back to fighting fires.”
— Hagerstown

“I guess Joe Pa, Joe Pa Paterno isn’t so much a hero anymore, is he, to a lot of you Penn State fans out there who were big fans of his? I think it’s really ridiculous and stupid for people to riot over him getting fired and so on. I mean, he’s a person just like me and you. He’s not God, is he? I don’t think so. But I do realize, we all find out in life who our true friends really are, to stick by you through thick and thin. I’m sure Joe Paterno is finding those people out, of who his true friends are.”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“Just wondering whether the two little black-and-white Scottie puppies found their way home Friday, at the intersection of 40 and Route 67 in Boonsboro.”
— Boonsboro

“This is about ‘Which comic do you love?’ in the paper Sunday ... for a chance to win a AC&T gift card. I’m not bothered about that, but I want you to keep all the funnies in there. If you don’t, I’m quitting the Morning Herald.”
— National Pike

“A swan, a beautiful, gracious gift for all of us to admire and enjoy — but some deeply disturbed, ungrateful person decided to shoot it to death at the canal, and so that gift is now gone. The world we live in is hard at times, but nature gives us a reprieve and softens our lives, when we give ourselves over to it. So why kill a beautiful gift?”
— Clear Spring

“Williamsport and Cearfoss callers, I get those calls, too, despite also being on the Do Not Call list. I’ll bet others do as well, and it’s infuriating, especially because they have a ‘press number if you don’t want to get these offers again’ recording, but even after repeatedly doing so, I still get them. Does anyone (know) how to do anything about this, file a complaint with the FCC and so on? Or do they get around the list on some technicality? And this might be a legitimate offer, but I wouldn’t give them my credit card number, no matter what they promise. It’s just not worth the risk.”
— Frederick, Md.

“I’m calling about the senior center in Hagerstown. Why don’t they put it out where the old hospital was, where that little building right next to the parking deck? They have plenty of parking, it’s uptown, it’s easier to get to for everybody, and it just makes more sense. It would probably be cheaper in the long run. They could have whatever they wanted, they could have their new building there, plus plenty of parking. Commissioners, city, get together. Use your head. Save us money to put it there. No one’s going to use it out at the college anyhow. It’s just going to be another building for the college.”
— Hagerstown

“Just got finished reading the ads for the grocery stores, to find my best bargains for Thanksgiving. I see two out of three major stores are closing at 3. The other is holding out until 5, for the last almighty dollar. What happened to the day when everyone was closed for Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas, so employees could enjoy the time with their family? And if you were a wife and mother, you even had time to cook.”
— Boonsboro

“Today is Monday, Nov. 14. At 1 o’clock, there was a terrible accident at the entrance to HCC. So we need two or three senior citizens out there, to add to the traffic. And I’ll tell you one thing, if you ever put that out there, you have to be crazy, because then you should have seen how far the traffic was ... yeah, and 30 seconds isn’t long enough to say anything.”
— Hagerstown

“Someone was wondering if cold cereal is good for you. Yes, it is, especially the wheat, the oat, and the rye cereals. Corn cereal does not do anything for you, so stay away from corn cereals.”
— Hagerstown

“This is to the caller from Smithsburg who said that, in response to The Herald-Mail, which investigated the Washington County fire department, they’d like to see the churches and clubs get investigated for their bingo and tip jars. Well, I’m pretty sure churches don’t sell tip jars, and the thing of it is the fire companies receive taxpayers’ money. Clubs and churches don’t. Use your head, please, Smithsburg. Why would you want to investigate somebody that’s not receiving taxpayers’ money?”
— Greencastle, Pa.

“I will use the senior center at HCC if it is built there. I like free parking and a great place to exercise, with many trails. There is a cafeteria and other benefits for me at the site. I don’t like driving downtown with all the traffic, and parking is a pain, with meters to feed. It would be good to have one at the girls club as well, for those who would benefit from being there.”
— Hagerstown

“This is to the caller from Smithsburg, about the Steelers fans waving their little yellow flags in surrender. Yeah, just to remind you, we have six Super Bowls, where you guys have one.”
— Sharpsburg
