SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. — A Chambersburg, Pa., woman died and two Shippensburg men were injured in a single-vehicle accident Tuesday night in Cumberland County, Pa., Pennsylvania State Police said.
Cindy L. Hull, 44, of Chambersburg, was pronounced dead at the scene as the result of head injuries, according to a news release from the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office.
The driver of the vehicle, Dennis Bumbaugh, 43, of Shippensburg, was taken to Chambersburg Hospital with moderate injuries, state police said.
A hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday he was not listed as a patient.
Jeffrey Fignar, 37, of Shippensburg, was taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Southampton Township, when a 1995 Buick Century that Bumbaugh was driving left the roadway after being passed by two vehicles, the release said. Police said the vehicle went down an embankment and struck a tree.
Fignar was flung forward from the back seat into the woman in the front passenger’s seat, troopers said. All three were trapped in the vehicle.
Rescue workers determined that the woman had died after Fignar was freed from the vehicle, the release said.
Bumbaugh’s vision was temporarily blocked when a passing tractor-trailer sprayed a large amount of water onto the Buick, the coroner’s office said.
State police said none of the trio was wearing seat belts.
