HAGERSTOWN — The St. Maria Goretti girls basketball team made quick work of host Broadfording Christian Academy with a 68-34 victory on Tuesday in the championship game of the Lions Classic.

The game started sluggishly, but Goretti (4-0) managed an 11-9 lead after the first quarter.

The Gaels blew the game open in the second quarter.

Sophomore guard and tournament MVP Seva Narkute scored nine of her game-high 24 points and Broadfording added six turnovers in the second period to help Goretti to a 34-14 halftime lead.

“We’re still a little out of control, but we take advantage of our opponent’s turnovers,” said Goretti coach Todd Rideout. “After the first quarter, we settled down and were able to run our offense.”

Goretti kept the foot on the gas in the second half with a 19-point third quarter, led by another nine points by Markute. The Gaels finished off the win with a 15-point fourth quarter.

“We have guards and forwards that can run,” said Rideout. “This year, with our new players, we have a good combo with our returning players. Now we’re getting fast breaks and finishing our layups.”

Freshman Ama Mitchual, one of the guards, took huge advantage of Goretti’s fast break opportunities as she hit on all five of her shots and both free throws for 13 points.

Forward Kris Cronise gave Goretti strength in the paint with a game-high 11 rebounds, while forward Lauree Lorensen facilitated the offense with five assists. Sophomore T.J. Tillman had 10 points and Narkute had a game-high eight steals.

Broadfording (1-1) aided Goretti’s offense with 20 turnovers.

Katie Connolly led the Lions with 21 points  — including three 3-pointers and 10-for-12 from the foul line.
