Moore is too much for Lions to handle

HAGERSTOWN — Rob Moore scored 25 points to lead Shenandoah Valley Christian Academy past Broadfording Christian 69-44 on Tuesday to win the championship in the Lions Classic.

“We have three good guards, but (Moore) is a strong player,” Shenandoah coach Ron Combs said. “He can drive to the basket and knock down some 3s, too.”

Moore, the tournament’s MVP who scored 12 points in the first half, fueled the Patriots in the second quarter as they outscored Broadfording 22-5.

The game was deadlocked at 12 after one period until Shenandoah’s strong offensive performance in the second quarter elevated the Patriots to a 34-17 halftime lead.

“We went man-to-man (in the second quarter),” Combs said. “The idea was to wear them down.”

“We were in a tough game last night,” Broadfording coach Burnie Clutz said. “The fatigue started to settle in during the second quarter. We lost our mental focus.”

The Lions also struggled from the foul line, just hitting six of 16 attempts.

The victory allowed the Patriots to avenge their loss in the final seconds of last year’s Lions Classic title game. Combs was happy to get another chance.

“It was tough last year, we got beat on a last-second play. It was good to come back and get the win this year,” Combs stated.

Despite trailing for much of the game, the Lions played hard in the closing minutes as they continued to crash the boards and fight for loose balls.

“I’m proud of the effort,” Clutz said. “They hustled their hearts out all night and that gives me as much satisfaction as a win. We’ll get better as the season goes on.”

Pape Mor Sall — who was selected for the all-tournament team — scored six points but had 13 rebounds and 11 blocks for Shenandoah.

Broadfording was paced by Mo Sallah, who finished with 12 points.
