Mail Call - Nov. 21

November 21, 2011

“I was reading in Thursday’s paper, I have to agree with the Middletown, Md., person who called in. It is a waste of time and taxpayers’ money for emissions, because there’s so much green gases and stuff these days that what they’re doing in Maryland with emission testing is just a waste of taxpayers’ money. They should just abolish it and be done with it.”

“These people who complain about getting their mail late in the day, this is your problem, not the mail system. Some people are born with no common sense. Mail carriers cannot be at everybody’s house at the same time. Find something else to complain about.”

— Hagerstown

“This is in response to the Halfway caller comparing the tea partiers to the Occupy Wall Street crowd. I would like you to show me one instance where you see the ‘tea party’ looting, raping, stealing, burning, upsetting cars, public disorder, shutting down businesses ... assaulting police, throwing rocks and bottles, public urination, public sex. If you can show me this, then I might overlook your stupid Mail Call.”

“This is on heating oil prices. I don’t know why the state senators and the federal government don’t investigate heating oil prices around the U.S., or around Washington County. It’s a shame. Got people on fixed incomes, and they’re charging ridiculous price for heating oil, when oil prices is going down — I watched TV yesterday — oil prices going down and heating oil going up, 4 cents a gallon. That is stupid. This supply and demand doesn’t go with me, and probably millions of other people, because supply and demand was here before. So it needs to be investigated. Maybe The Herald-Mail could.”

“Here’s some hard facts for people out there like myself who are wondering whatever happened to traditional values. Forty percent of babies born in America are born outside of marriage. One in four children lives in a single-parent home. Households headed by unmarried women make up more than half of all families living in poverty. Now, married couples tend to have higher income ... than do single, cohabitating couples. Just something to look at, when people are wondering what’s happened to America.”

“The mayor and council meeting this past Tuesday, police said they’ve got four police officers in the downtown section. Four police officers to watch one block? Plus our auxiliary policeman — and in today’s paper there’s more people moving out of downtown. That’s a waste of taxpayers’ money. Police officers do a good job.”

“The Herald-Mail is going to have 27,000 square feet of space that’s not needed. It would be an ideal place to put a swimming pool in the lower level and make the whole front of the building a senior center. The county commissioners could buy the building, and then rent it back to The Herald-Mail. The income from renting the space that they’re using, which is around 17,000 square feet, might pay the maintenance and upkeep and utilities on the entire building, and there’s plenty of parking there. And being as there’s nothing there, it would be easy to revamp that building to put in a senior center, exactly what they need. And being as it would have an area that would have a pool inside, it’s a lot of seniors do need that kind of physical help.”

“I see in the paper today in Mail Call where people support the way people are acting, demonstrating. UAW union is paying people to do that, and the rest of them are mostly people who are criminals. There are some good people have good ideas, but all this is, is the union supporting President Obama, causing this ... People say this is good for our country, act like a bunch of heathens.”

— Hagerstown

“The Herald-Mail reports that nearly 50 percent of our schoolchildren are on free and reduced lunches. Children also receive free breakfast. These programs were begun by Democrats, just as Social Security and Medicare were begun by Democrats. Rather than thanking Democrats, over 50 percent of Washington County citizens vote Republican.”

— Halfway

“I hope you print this, Mail Call, but I would like to know who’s responsible for taking the limbs and trees away from the roads. You have to be afraid to pass somebody. You might get ... your truck or car might get scratched up. Does somebody out there know? It should be done. It should be cleaned up underneath the lines along the road, especially Wolfsville Road. That is a mess. Please, somebody out there put something in Mail Call and let me know.”

— Smithsburg

“I’m calling about the people in the paper who keep complaining about our mail delivery system, not getting their mail until 3 or 4 in the evening, or 7 to 8. I think that if they’re that concerned about their mail, then they should get a box down at the post office. Our mailmen do a wonderful job, and it doesn’t matter what time they deliver it, as long as it’s delivered.”
