WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ALFRED, N.Y. — Alessandro Flores scored 22 of her game-high 31 points and Kishia Jackson hit three of her four 3-pointers in the second half as Hagerstown Community College notched a 71-62 win over Genesee on Sunday in the second day of the Alfred (N.Y.) mixer.

“We kept persisting,” HCC coach Marlys Palmer said. “We had a lot of defensive intensity. It was a rough close game all the way.”

HCC (5-0) completed a weekend of firsts, as Sunday’s win was its first ever over Genesee. The Hawks defeated host Alfred on Saturday for their first-ever win against that program on its home floor.

HCC trailed 29-26 at the half and came back strong behind Jackson and Flores. The Hawks moved to a 12-point lead and held off a Genesse comeback as Jackson hit a 3 to keep the lead at six.

Flores became active with the ball and started to get to the foul line, where she hit eight straight shots to help HCC gain some distance. The sophomore hit 12 of 16 free throws.

Jackson finished with 12 points while Yolanda Pinckett added eight points and 13 rebounds. Katie Sprecher had five points and seven boards, while Flores added five assists and two steals.
