Pinkcett leads HCC women to tourney final

ALFRED, N.Y. — Yolonda Pinkcett posted her third straight double-double with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Hagerstown Community College women’s basketball team to a 72-60 victory over host Alfred in the first round of the Alfred Tournament on Saturday.

Alessandra Flores had 17 points, Jasmine Reynolds had 13 points and Katie Sprecher had 10 rebounds for the Hawks (4-0).

West Virginia St. 75, Shepherd 72

INSTITUTE, W.Va. — Shepherd University trailed by as many as nine points in the second half but rallied to within three with a minute left before falling to West Virginia State (1-1, 1-1) in the West Virginia Conference.

Katie Biggs had 12 points, Hannah Safren had 11 points and Emily Daniel and Alex Tamez reached double digits with 10 point apiece for Shepherd. Shelby Fayak added nine points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds for the Rams (2-1, 0-1), who had a 57-46 rebounding advantage.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — St. Maria Goretti’s Josh Semler won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.51) and the 100 freestyle (53.69) and Jefferson’s Keegan Simmons won the 200 IM (2:10.79) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.39).

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — Keeley Scott won the 200-yard IM (2:38.73) and the 100 backstroke (1:09.87) for St. Maria Goretti.


Scott teamed up with Cassidy Lippert, Theresa Barton and Emma Whelan to break the school record and win the 200 medley relay (2:05.21) to qualify for the Metro Swim Meet. Scott, Amanda Meinschein, Whelan and Annie Cochran won the 400 freestyle relay (4:21.27), while Barton, Meinschein, Jenna Katrina and Lippert won the 200 freestyle relay (1:54.56) and also qualified for the Metro meet for the Gaels.

Jefferson’s Luisa Holland won the 100 freestyle (58.75) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.80) for Jefferson.

Grace splits two games

WINCHESTER, Va. — Grace Academy split two games in the Mountain View Christian Pre-Thanksgiving Tournament.

The Knights (2-2) lost to Calvary Temple 54-22 before defeating Shenandoah Valley Home School 40-35.

Shawn Price had 17 points in two games, including 12 to lead the win over Shenandoah.

Lewis signs at Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Boonsboro senior Justin Lewis will take his bat and glove to the West Virginia Conference in 2013.

Lewis signed a letter of intent to play baseball for Glenville State College, a Division II school and member of the WVIAC. He was receruited by coach Tom Gilbert as a second baseman.

Lewis hit .531 as one of the top Washington County players last year with 26 hits, 26 runs scored, 24 RBI and 23 walks.

Glenville State is reinstating its baseball program in 2012 after a 34-year absence.
