Richard John Sodergren Sr., 71, of Hagerstown, Md., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family and friends. He previously resided in Suffolk, Va., Columbia, S.C., and Homestead, Fla.

Born Dec. 4, 1939, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Eugene V. Sodergren Sr. and Shirley L. Morgan Sodergren.

He was retired from Pangborn Corporation and GST Auto Leather. He was previously employed by Henson & Son and Can-Am Steel.

He attended Hagerstown High School and Boonsboro High School.

He was of the Baptist faith.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, hunting in Wyoming and Canada. He also was an avid Baltimore Ravens and NASCAR fan, and liked horse racing.

He was a former member of the Sons of the American Legion Post 211, Greencastle (Pa.) Sportsman Club and Izaak Walton League.

He was a great husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Nellie R. Sodergren; a son, Richard J. Sodergren Jr.; grandchildren, Rebecca Mana and husband, Robert, Tonya Murray and husband, Anthony, and Anthony Sodergren and Emily Sodergren; and daughter-in-law, Tammy Sodergren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene V. Sodergren Jr.

A funeral service will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown. The Rev. Walt Roberts and the Rev. Ronald K. Faith will officiate. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
