One person taken by ambulance from scene of I-70 crash

November 18, 2011

One person was taken to the hospital Friday morning after an accident on eastbound Interstate 70 under the Dual Highway (U.S. 40) bridge at Exit 32, Trooper Conner of the Maryland State Police said.

A Toyota Avalon came off the ramp from Dual Highway onto eastbound I-70 and struck a tractor-trailer in the right lane, Conner said. The car then spun out of control and landed in the median facing up the embankment.

The driver of the Avalon was removed from the car by firefighters and EMS workers from the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. and Hagerstown Community Rescue Service. The driver was then taken to Meritus Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Conner said.

Police responded to the accident around 9:50 a.m. Friday and closed the left lane of eastbound I-70. The lane reopened after the car was towed away at  about 10:35 a.m.

Two firetrucks from the Funkstown Volunteer Fire Co. and an ambulance from Hagerstown Community Rescue Service were both on the scene. The Washington County Sheriff's Office was assisting the Maryland State Police, and the Maryland State Highway Administration was also on the scene.
