The Rev. Eric Alan Walter Norgard, 50, of Hagerstown, died unexpectedly on Wednesday Nov. 16, 2011.

Born June 12, 1961, in Madison, Wis., he was the son of the late David Walter Norgard and the late Elizabeth Kristin (Paulson) Norgard.

Pastor Norgard graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, with a B.A. in English, and earned his Master of Divinity from Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minn.

Pastor Norgard was ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in 1989. He served Independence Lutheran Church near Eau Claire, Wis., Fox Point Lutheran Church in Milwaukee, Wis., Grace Lutheran Church in Needham, Mass., Messiah New Hope Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D., and most recently he was serving as the senior pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Md.

Pastor Norgard had a wisdom about him, an enduring kindness and acceptance of others and understanding of their needs. He was profoundly sensitive and empathetic and had a brilliant mind. He had patience and compassion that was felt by everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed by his many friends, relatives, family, and members of his congregations and community.

Pastor Norgard enjoyed spending time with his family. He adored his daughters. He also enjoyed photography, the outdoors, music and listening to NPR.

He is survived by his loving wife, Lisa Michele (Anderson) Norgard; his beloved daughters, Kristina Lilia Norgard and Elisabet "Betsy" Mae Norgard; his sister, Barbara Ann Norgard and her life partner, Pamela Leindecker, and his sister, Linda Beth (Norgard) Karr and her husband, Michael Karr. He also is survived by his maternal aunt and uncle, May Pauline and J. Stewart Given of Ottawa, Canada, and many cousins; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Emory Dean Anderson and Geraldine Mae (Christensen) Anderson; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Philip Dean Anderson and Sophie Broderick and John Emory Anderson and Christine (Beck) Anderson and his niece, Katherine Broderick Anderson, and his nephews, Cole Thomas Anderson and Nathan James Anderson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kristin Lilia (Norgard) Scott; and his brother, David Bruce Norgard.

The family will receive friends Sunday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 5 p.m. at Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd. North, Hagerstown.

A memorial service will be Monday, Nov. 21, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 15 Randolph Ave., Hagerstown, followed by a luncheon at the church in Fellowship Hall.
