Grace girls, boys into hoops finals

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kelsey Koontz scored 23 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and added four assists to lead Grace Academy to a 43-17 victory over Mountain View Christian on Monday in the Grace Tipoff Tournament.

Grace (1-0) will meet St. Maria Goretti (1-0) — an 85-12 winner over Fulton County Christian — in the girls championship game tonight.

Caitlin Cox contributed 12 points, seven steals and five rebounds, while Meghan Broadwater had 11 rebounds for Grace.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Grace Academy 59, Fulton Co. Christian 28

Peter Hykes scored 17 points and Shawn Price added 12 points and five assists as Grace Academy rolled over Fulton County Christian in the semifinals of the Grace Tipoff Tournament.

Daniel Frederickson had eight rebounds, Anthony Brown had six steals and E.J. Boutieller added five assists for the Knights (1-0).

Grace will meet Mountain View Christian in the tournament final tonight.

Shepherd finishes 21st

Shepherd University is ranked 21st in the latest AFCA Division II coaches’ poll, released Monday.

The Rams recorded a 38-21 win over Fairmont State on Saturday to finish the season 9-2. They were not selected to participate in the 16-team national tournament.

Davis earns WVIAC accolade

Shepherd University cornerback Elijah Davis was named West Virginia Conference Defensive Co-Player of the Week after picking off a pass and returning it for a touchdown in a 38-21 victory at Fairmont State on Saturday.

The pick-six was Davis’ fourth this season, tying an NCAA Division II record. It also marked the eighth time the Rams have scored on a return this season, a Division II team record.



WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Rams’ Daniel gets honor

Shepherd University senior Emily Daniel has been named West Virginia Conference Player of the Week.

Daniel helped the Rams to a 2-0 start to the season. She had 24 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and three steals in the season opener, then in limited action against Virginia State, she had six points and five rebounds.



COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL

Jeschelnik, Lewis make WVIAC all-tournament team

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Shepherd University senior setter Lauren Jeschelnik and sophomore hitter Melani Lewis were named to the 2011 West Virginia Conference All-Tournament team.

Jeschelink had 102 assists and 37 digs in three tournament matches. Lewis had 27 kills.

Shepherd went 2-1 in the tournament.
