Audrey Elliott Beatty of Chestertown, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, after a long illness. She was unable to stand or walk, and was confined to a wheelchair or bed. She was also unable to eat or swallow.

She was born Jan. 31, 1930, on the second-floor bedroom at 218 Mount Vernon Ave. in Chestertown. At the time, Chestertown did not have a hospital. Her father, William Elli Elliott, who was a master carpenter, built the two- story house himself. The cost of all the materials at the time was only $1,500.

Audrey attended Chestertown Elementary School and Chestertown High School, where she graduated class of 1946. She later took classes at Montgomery Junior College in Maryland.

Audrey attended Christ United Methodist Church as a child for 22 years, and later played the piano for Sunday school and church.

On Sept. 14, 1952, she married Kenneth E. Beatty of Springfield, Ill., after he returned from the Korean War. She had two wonderful sons, Donald L. Beatty and Thomas “Greg” Beatty, and one granddaughter, Audrey C. Beatty. She lived with her husband and sons in Silver Spring and Hagerstown, Md., Howe, Ind., and Jackson, Mich. She followed her husband’s employment to these cities and various jobs.

Audrey worked for Fireman’s Insurance Co. while in Chestertown, and worked for Harper and Roe Medical Publications in Hagerstown, then at Dwaine Carter’s Insurance Co. in Jackson, and later a receptionist at Heron Point after their return to Chestertown in 1997.

Audrey had her first brain surgery for a tumor in 1998. She was OK for nine years. In 2007-08, Audrey had four more major surgeries, which caused her to become handicapped and confined to a wheelchair or a bed at Caroline Nursing home in Denton, Md.  She went to be with the Lord after nearly a year. She will really be missed by family and friends.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church. A reception will be held after the service at the residence, 218 Mount Vernon Ave., Chestertown, MD 21620.
