Madaline Irene Socks Bender Springer, 100, of Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center.

Born Jan. 2, 1911, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Carrie M. Kennedy Socks.

Her first husband, Fred S. Bender, died in 1934, and her second husband, Ernest W. “Jack” Springer, died in 1981.

She attended Washington County schools and Columbia Business College of Hagerstown.

She was employed by Fairchild Aircraft for 12 years. She was previously employed at the Hagerstown Shoe Factory and local department stores.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Willing Workers Sunday school class and the Golden Membership club. She was also a member of the West End Senior Citizens.

She is survived by one daughter, Sandra K. Markle of Brownsville, Md.; two special nieces whom she helped to raise, Delores M. Barber White of Baltimore, Md., and Joanne L. Barber Hess of Charles Town, W.Va.; one sister, Evelyn G. Mills of Baltimore; one stepgrandson, Gary Markle of Ashburn, Va.; and many other nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Clara May, Dora Wyand and Charlotte Barber; and four brothers, George Albert Socks, John Ed Socks, William F. Socks and Donald Socks.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Grace United Methodist Church, 712 W. Church St., Hagerstown, MD 21740. The Rev. Clark D. Carr will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grace United Methodist Church.
