Martinsburg home heavily damaged in Sunday fire

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Sunday afternoon fire heavily damaged a house at 1114 Washington Ave. and killed two cats, Martinsburg Fire Capt. Greg Hoover said.

The fire in the two-story, single-family house started accidentally on a front porch because of discarded smoking materials, Hoover said.

The fire was dispatched at 12:29 p.m. and was brought under control by 1:47 p.m. Hoover said firefighters cleared the scene off Winchester Avenue by 5 p.m.

Three adults and one child were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, Hoover said.

“It’s definitely uninhabitable, quite a bit of damage,” he said of the house.

Fire damaged the front of the house on all floors, and smoke damaged the remainder of the structure, he said.

“With the older homes in the city, a lot of them are balloon-frame construction,” Hoover said. Gaps in the walls stretch across several floors, he said.

No injuries were reported, Hoover said.
