Not long ago, there was a sign painted on the side of a building at the southwest corner of Potomac and Franklin streets.

"The Uptown Shoppes of Downtown Hagerstown," it read in bold white letters.

Listed with gold stars were six stores — Maggie's Hang-ups, Basketful of Gifts, The Figurehead II, The Boutique LLC, Lena's of Hagerstown and L&L Classic Clothing.

A few weeks ago, the deep blue sign was painted over in an off-white.

Also gone are most of the businesses. Of the six, the only one remaining is L&L Classic Clothing on North Potomac Street.

However, there is a sign in the window saying L&L Classic Clothing is moving to the Old Orchard Shopping Center on Virginia Avenue.
