Rachel (Palmer) Shafer, 89, of Middletown, Md., went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Frederick Memorial Hospital in Frederick, Md.

Born July 29, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Malcolm and Mary (Remsburg) Palmer.  

Mrs. Shafer was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Albert V. Shafer, on Sept. 4, 2009.

Mrs. Shafer was a 1941 graduate of Boonsboro High School. She held a variety of jobs outside the home, first with the American Store in Boonsboro, Md., and most recently with Weis Markets at Amber Meadows in Frederick, until her retirement.   

Rachel was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Middletown.

Mrs. Shafer is survived by a daughter, Nancy L. Detrow, and her husband, Donald, of Hagerstown, Md.; a son, Albert L. Shafer of Middletown; two sisters, Lorraine and her husband, Bernard Funk, of Myersville, Md., and Frances Blickenstaff of Boonsboro; two brothers, Malcolm Palmer Jr. and his wife, Sara Jane, of Hagerstown, and Kenneth Palmer of Columbia, Md. She is also survived by two granddaughters, Dawn and her husband, Mikel Thomas, and Katie Peck; and one grandson, Keith Detrow, and his wife, Mendy. In addition, she is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Brandi and Mikey Thomas, Bryan and Matthew Detrow, and Janell and Devin Peck.  

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Avice Smith and Sarah Long; and one brother, Amos Palmer.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2011, at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike, Boonsboro. The Rev. Cris Frigm will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Middletown.

Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at the funeral home.
