Mail Call - Nov. 10

November 10, 2011

“The Occupy Wall Street people are no more bums than the tea partiers were. Thank goodness they’re there.”

— Halfway

“We have county government and city government spending our money with real estate. I don’t think they should be in the real estate business. We have the mayor of Hagerstown blowing way out of proportion the North/South football game. My question’s this. All our county and city leaders, why don’t they speak up and make a big deal out of how many children are on free lunches because their family is living below the poverty level? I get tired of hearing how great this person is, how great that person is, what a great event this is coming up. What happened to the children? And that’s what you always hear when the BOE wants a raise: We need it for the children.”

— Hagerstown

“I would like to thank the garbage collectors on Thursday morning, for a great job. They put all the trash cans on the sidewalk upside down, the whole way down the street. There was no trash cans out in the street, or lids and trash cans thrown all over the place. They did a great job. Keep up the good work.”

— Hagerstown’s East End

“This caller from the North End who said the Occupy Wall Street protesters are just a bunch of bums, who do they think they are? These people are against the rich making money off the poor the way they’ve been doing. They’re just sick of it. We’re sick of it. I live off $19,000 a year, my wife and I. That’s what we live off of. Could you, caller? Oh, no, wait a minute — North End. Oh, well, that explains it.”

— Hagerstown

“Waynesboro, you have to keep up-to-date on unions. President Obama says he owes unions. He wrote much about it in his autobiographies. They gave over $500 million to his campaign. He turned GM over to the unions. The old shareholders of GM got nothing back in their paid-in stock money. Teachers’ unions got $28 million, August 2010 (so the children wouldn’t be without teachers.) Teachers said they never lost their jobs in the first place. Obama has created more government jobs than any president, and unionized them. SEIU are in Occupy Wall (Street) now.”

— Hagerstown

“I periodically check the sex offenders registry to see if any more have moved into my neighborhood. Checking it this week, I saw that dozens live within a three-block radius of the city square, and many live near schools or child care centers. Maybe the council needs to address this problem in its ‘new’ master plan to revitalize downtown.”

— Williamsport

“I’d like to know what is wrong with our mail system today. We don’t get our mail until 3 or 4 o’clock in the evening. What’s going to happen when Christmastime comes? We won’t get it until 7 or 8 o’clock. I can’t understand what’s wrong with this mail system.”

— Boonsboro

“The reason for my call is I was concerned about the emissions fees going up. When I lived in the state of Minnesota 10 years ago, they canceled emission testing, because they thought it was a waste of taxpayers’ money, and a waste of keeping the buildings open that do emissions. Most cars today do pass emissions. There’s very few that don’t, and it’s a waste of taxpayers’ money and shouldn’t be allowed. I read The Herald-Mail daily.”

— Middletown, Md.

“Wonder why the mainstream media is not interviewing the small business owners that are located around Occupy Wall Street protests. They could interview them, and the owners could tell everyone how these protesters are destroying their business by not allowing customers to enter their stores.”

— Sharpsburg

“I certainly hope they soon get this fiasco at Halfway Boulevard and the mall finished. Christmas shopping starts in three weeks. Then it’s going to be a real nightmare.”

— Halfway
