William "Bill" Wells, 79, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at his home.
Born April 8, 1932, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Harold and Katherine Ringer Wells.
He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School. He received his bachelor's degree from Shepherd University, master's degree from the University of Maine, and doctorate of education from the University of Maryland.
He was employed by the Washington County Board of Education until his retirement. He helped integrate the school system of Washington County. He was a principal for more than 30 years, and a pupil personnel worker. He was the administrator at Fountaindale and Sharpsburg elementary schools and various other schools within the county.
He was a founding member of Antietam Fly Anglers Club of Hagerstown. He was a member of Friends of the Library of Washington County and served on the board of directors at Brook Lane.
He was an avid bird watcher and a founding member of the local Audubon Society.
He was a devout Christian.
Survivors include wife, Nina G. Arney Wells, married 25 years, of Hagerstown; daughter, N. Elizabeth Wells of Portland, Ore.; daughter, Liesl A. Case of Kalamazoo, Mich.; stepdaughter, Barbara Palmer of Kalamazoo; stepson, Harry Palmer of Detroit, Mich.; stepson, Richard Palmer of Poolesville, Md.; brother, Terry Wright of Baltimore, Md.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; seven stepgrandchildren, and one stepgreat-grandson.
Funeral services will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Williamsport, Md., on Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. W. Gregory Martin officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Interment will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Hagerstown.
