HAGERSTOWN — Fire caused substantial damage to a single-story home at 1104 Sunnyside Drive in Hagerstown Wednesday night, Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said.

The fire, which was reported at 7:18 p.m., started in a bedroom closet, DeHaven said.

The fire caused heat and smoke damage on the main floor of the house, which also has a basement, DeHaven said.

The occupants of the house, Thomas and Hope Wolfe, were alerted to the fire by one of their dogs, DeHaven said.

The Wolfes were able to get two dogs out of the house but a cat in the house died, DeHaven said.

DeHaven said he is still investigating the cause of the fire, but it appears to be an “unintentional source.”

The Red Cross was helping the Wolfes with living assistance, DeHaven said.

Sunnyside Drive is a short distance off Pennsylvania Avenue in the city’s North End.
