New Food Lion supermarket opening Wed. in northern Berkeley County

MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Food Lion will open its new store near the Interstate 81 exit for Marlowe and Falling Waters, W.Va., tomorrow morning, the supermarket chain announced Tuesday.

The grand opening festivities at 78 Worchester Drive in the Riverside Marketplace shopping center are scheduled to start at 7:45 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The company said it created 60 jobs with the opening of the store, which is the ninth Food Lion in the Eastern Panhandle.

“The first 200 customers to enter the store Wednesday will receive a free Food Lion reusable bag filled with store brand products,” company spokesman Benny L. Smith said in a news release.

Customers visiting the store on Wednesday will be able to register for an in-store shopping spree and Food Lion also will make give $1,000 “community gift” to local schools, according to the news release.

"We look forward to serving the Falling Waters community, and providing low prices to local customers," Smith said.

Matt Webber, who has worked at Food Lion for 14 years, will serve as the store manager.

“We are dedicated to being Falling Water’s neighborhood grocery store,” Webber said in the news release. “Food Lion is committed to offering an expanded selection of quality products at great prices and providing an outstanding shopping experience to our customers.”

There are more than 1,100 Food Lion supermarkets in the Southeast and mid-Atlantic regions of the United States, according to the company.

The new Food Lion features a fresh produce department,  deli/bakery with in-store decorated cakes, Sara Lee specialty meats, cheeses and breads, as well as a large meat department and a pharmacy, according to the news release. In addition, customers can access a variety of convenience services, such as Western Union, Rug Doctor rentals, Blue Rhino propane exchange, ATM, and Coinstar machine.
