MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A 42-year-old man was in Eastern Regional Jail Tuesday night on charges he sexually abused a 9-year-old girl that he was watching in her family's absence, according to Berkeley County Magistrate Court and jail records.

Alfonso Diaz Chavez of 151 Arch St., Martinsburg, was arraigned Monday evening by Magistrate Joan V. Bragg on one count of first-degree sexual abuse and one count of sexual abuse by person of trust, according to court records.

Bragg set a $50,000 cash-only bond for the defendant, according to court records.

The defendant is accused of touching the girl inappropriately in August 2011, and the victim told authorities that Chavez made her touch him, according to court records.

The incident happened at Chavez' home while his wife was working and the defendant's children also were in the residence when the alleged incident occurred, according to court documents.

West Virginia State Police Trooper F.H. Edwards began investigating the allegations in October when the complaint was received, according to court documents.
