Mary Lou Groves McCune, 89, of Martinsburg, passed away Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011, at her residence.

Born May 7, 1922, in Elkins, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Albert and Della Faye Workman Groves.

She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, chairwoman of the administrative board and was active with the United Methodist Women.

She grew up in Gassaway, where she met her beloved husband, Richard. They graduated from Gassaway High School and then from West Virginia University. She then worked as a social worker while her husband attended and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia.

In addition to raising four sons, all of whom became Eagle Scouts, she raised one daughter, “not qualified to be a Boy Scout.” She was Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother. The Scouting community honored her with the James E. West Award.

She served for many years as secretary of the Red Cross board of directors and was a past president of the W.Va. School Boards Association. One of her most enjoyable experiences was her eight-year term on the West Virginia State Humanities Foundation.

She was active as president of the American Association of University Women, the Gateway Garden Club, the Medical Auxiliary of the Eastern Panhandle Medical Society, the Travel Club and the Berkeley County Historical Society.

She is survived by the love of her life, her husband of 68 years, Dr. William Richard McCune; one daughter, Elizabeth M. Hamrick and husband, Page Hamrick III; four sons, William Richard McCune Jr. and wife, Judy, Christopher Groves McCune and wife, Ellen, Brance Lindsey McCune and wife, Debbie, and Alex Groves McCune and wife, Tammy; 16 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Groves Jr. and wife, Shirley; one sister, Patricia Stewart and husband, Guy; one sister-in-law, Jody Groves; and one brother-in-law, Gene McCune.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. N. Blaine Groves; and one sister, Eleanor Stedman.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Lloyd McCanna and the Rev. Julie Harris of Trinity Episcopal Church officiating. Interment will be private.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, at Brown Funeral Home.
