MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — Members of Berkeley County Schools’ crisis team were at Hedgesville Middle School on Monday to offer counseling to students and faculty mourning the death of a 12-year-old student there.

Berkeley County Schools Superintendent Manny P. Arvon II confirmed after Monday's Board of Education meeting that Taitlyn Hughes, a student at the school, died Sunday after she woke up Friday morning with a severe headache.

“It's so sad ...,” Arvon said. "I feel so bad for those children."

Arvon commended members of the volunteer counseling team in their response to the school.

Arvon said he was told that Hughes was an outstanding student, a cheerleader and was a popular student at Hedgesville Middle School.

"It puts a lot of things in perspective very quickly," Arvon told board members, saying the school district administration's thoughts and prayers are with the Hughes family and those mourning her death.
