Virginia Ann Switzer Funkhouser, 92, a longtime resident of Hagerstown and winter resident of Delray Beach, Fla., passed away Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, in Baltimore, Md.
She was the widow of Lewis Orrick Funkhouser, to whom she was married for 34 years. Mr. Funkhouser was the manager of the former Kidder, Peabody brokerage firm.
Born March 13, 1919, in Harrisonburg, Va., she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Robert Switzer.
She attended Hollins College.
Mr. Funkhouser, a lifelong resident of Hagerstown, moved briefly to Harrisonburg, where they married. They moved to Hagerstown in 1946.
She was active in the Hagerstown Garden Club, winning best in show for a Japanese-style arrangement. She also was a member of the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts and several bridge clubs. She held memberships at Fountain Head Country Club and the St. Andrew's Club in Florida.
She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Hagerstown and St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Delray Beach.
She moved to an assisted-living facility in Baltimore in 2008.
She is survived by two children, a son, Lewis Orrick "Rick" Funkhouser Jr. of Baltimore, and a daughter, Weslie F. Wornom of Plantation, Fla.; four grandchildren, Virginia Page Zanella of Memphis, Lewis Carter Wornom of Baltimore, Beverly Orrick Funkhouser of Baltimore and Virginia Pruitt Funkhouser of Washington, D.C.; and two great-grandchildren, Virginia Myers Zanella and Maryn Ramsey Zanella of Memphis.
She was preceded in death by her brother, John Robert Switzer Jr.
Private burial will be held at Rose Hill Cemetery mausoleum in the family plot.
A memorial service will be Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at noon at St. John's Episcopal Church, 102 S. Prospect St., Hagerstown.
