Memorial Rec Center benefit dance Saturday

Memorial Recreation Center will hold its fifth annual benefit dance Saturday from 7 to 11:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center gym, 131 W. North St. in Hagerstown.   

Attendees must be 18 or older to attend. There will be door prizes and a raffle. Food will be available for purchase. Proceeds will benefit the children of Memorial Recreation Center. Tickets cost $13 in advance and $15 at the door.

Bazaar and yard sale

John Wesley United Methodist Church will hold a bazaar and yard sale Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The church is at 129 N. Potomac St. in Hagerstown.

The event will include crafts, homemade soups, used books sale and yard sale items.

Health seminar

The Local Health Disparities Committee will hold a community health orientation Saturday, Nov. 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown.

This effort is sponsored by the Minority Outreach and Technical Assistance program for Washington County, with the support of Brothers Who Care, Hagerstown YMCA Achievers, Hispanic Association of Hagerstown, Meritus Medical Center, U.S. Sen. Barbara A. Mikulski, Walnut Street Community Health Center, Washington County Health Department and Washington County Free Library.

The committee was formed in Washington County to help develop solutions and activities to promote improvement in the health of the minority populations in the area, with a focus on heart disease and cancer.  

Hispanic Association of Hagerstown President Diana Reyes is committee chairwoman, with Tommy Parker of Brothers Who Care serving as vice chairman. Holly Luther of the health department’s cancer-control program serves as chief of information.  

The next committee meeting is tentatively planned for Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 6 p.m. at a location to be announced.

Books for Babies

The “Reading to Make Cents” contest to raise money for the Books for Babies program will be held the week of Nov. 13 to 20. Students will be bringing home white fliers with bright green print. The money will be used to buy books that will be included in a book packet presented to each newborn at Meritus Medical Center.

Fashion show

The For Our Kids Sake coordinators have rescheduled its fashion show for Sunday Nov. 20, starting at 3 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Center, 131 W. North St. in Hagerstown.  Youths, especially high school and college-age students, are needed to help with modeling.

On Saturday, from 1 to 4 p.m. Gordon’s Grocery, at 101 Cypress St., will hold a wine- tasting. The event is a benefit for homeless animals in Washington County and attendees are asked to bring pet items, such as blankets, toys, kitty litter and food for the animals housed at the Humane Society of Washington County.
