CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A bridge on the main road between Waynesboro, Pa., and Chambersburg reopened at 2 p.m. Thursday, according to a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation spokesman.
The bridge on Pa. 316 south of Chambersburg had been closed for several months.
Whiting-Turner Contracting Co. of Baltimore faces penalties of more than $580,000 for missing deadlines, PennDOT spokesman Greg Penny said.
The bridge, which goes over CSX railroad tracks in Guilford Township, Pa., closed in mid-July for a $1.8 million replacement of its superstructure.
Traffic was detoured using Interstate 81 since the bridge closed. PennDOT records indicate Pa. 316, known locally as Wayne Highway, averages 9,772 vehicles a day.
Penny said motorists might encounter single-lane closures in coming days as lines are painted.
