MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — A Berkeley County grand jury Thursday indicted two men on charges of killing Vickie E. Clem, who was the mother of one of the men, and the stabbing of her husband at the couple's home in May.
Both Joshua L. Stitley, 33, of Hancock, and Roy L. Wisotzkey, 34, of Hagerstown, were indicted on counts of murder, felony murder, attempted murder, malicious assault, burglary, conspiracy and two counts of assault during the commission of a felony and two counts of first-degree robbery, according to the indictments released by Berkeley County Prosecuting Attorney Pamela Games-Neely's office.
Stitley, Clem's son, also was indicted on counts of fleeing while driving under the influence from a law-enforcement officer and fraudulent use of an access device, a Visa check card, according to the indictments.
Both men, who were among 89 people indicted this week by the grand jury seated for the October term of circuit court in Berkeley County, remained in Eastern Regional Jail, according to jail records.
Police have alleged Wisotzkey and Stitley went to the Clems' house at 81 Vinca Lane in Potomac Heights subdivision in Falling Waters, W.Va., with a sword and a baseball bat with the intention of burglarizing the house.
Vickie Clem was struck with a baseball bat and stabbed with a knife, according to the indictments. The men are accused of taking a key chain with keys on it, a Visa check card, among other cards and $500 in cash from the residence, according to the indictments.
An indictment merely indicates that an individual is believed to have committed the crime.
Police responded to the home to investigate at 8:21 a.m. on May 27 after a caller told authorities that a naked man was in her front yard yelling for help.
Stitley's stepfather, Jack Clem, was stabbed during an argument, police have said.
His wife died of multiple blunt force trauma, officials have said.
The men were arrested shortly afterward in a van along Hedgesville Road (W.Va. 9).
Stitley was seen drinking from a pint bottle of vodka as a West Virginia State Police trooper approached to speak to him, according to court documents. He appeared to be intoxicated and admitted he had consumed a lot of vodka, police had said.
Police have alleged that Stitley said he stabbed his stepfather and pushed him down the stairs during an argument.
