Hubs find 2-for-1 deal to their liking

HAGERSTOWN — North Hagerstown’s golf team picked up two titles for the price of one on a rainy day at Black Rock Golf Course.

Behind junior Aaron Staley’s 2-over-par 74, the Hubs took home first place in the MVAL Antietam Conference championship with a 334 team total, nine strokes ahead of Williamsport’s 343.

Defending champion Smithsburg was third with 346.

In addition, North, Williamsport and Smithsburg were deadlocked for first place using dual-meet records during the regular season and used the conference meet as the tiebreaker, with the Hubs adding to their laurels.

“You’re always happy when you win and today it was a double dip,” said North coach Joel Rice. “We’ve played steady all year.”

Staley and Smithsburg’s Kyle Huntzberry have staged some battles, but Friday belonged to Staley — especially when the two went in different directions after the sixth hole, when the heaviest rains hit the area.

After teeing off in the same group on the first hole, Huntzberry held a three-shot lead over Staley through six.

“I started hitting shots where I couldn’t miss (the next shot),” said Staley, who began his march to medalist honors with a birdie on the 120-yard seventh hole for a 2.

“I just started hitting better irons on the back nine,” said Staley, who had birdies on 10, 14 and 16. After a front-nine 39, Staley closed with a 1-under 35 on the back.

Meanwhile, Huntzberry went the other way and ended with a 40-41—81.

“I hit only 1 of 14 greens in regulation,” said Huntzberry, “and that’s horrendous. I let the rain bother me and had a string of six straight bogeys.”

Chad Shindle and Drew Miguel each shot 85 and Nate Parchment added a 90 for North’s team scores. Miguel shot a 39 on the front.

Williamsport had a solid 1-2 punch from Scott Drury and Ryan Crabtree. Drury shot a 79 and Crabtree came in with an 80, which included a 38 on the front nine — the best of the tournament.

Catoctin finished fourth with 360, South Hagerstown was fifth with 372, Clear Spring took sixth with 386, Boonsboro was seventh with 394 and Brunswick finished eighth with 405.

Cody Reeder led South with a career-best 87.
