Blake's hat trick lifts Gaels to win

Thomas Blake scored three goals and Kevin Proctor had three assists as St. Maria Goretti won its Homecoming game Saturday, 5-0 over St. John’s Catholic Prep.

Mateo Pelja and Darrick Brown each had a goal and Clarence Wroblewski added an assist for the Gaels (8-3). Drew Katrina had four saves and John Winalski had three in combining on the shutout.

Smithsburg 4, Catoctin 3

SMITHSBURG — Adler Garrett scored the winning goal off an assist from Clayton Layman in the third minute of overtime as Smithsburg defeated Catoctin in an MVAL Antietam match.

The Leopards (3-5, 3-1) trailed 3-2 at halftime, but Haroon Pasha scored off an assist from Kevin Gibson in the 74th minute to tie the match.

Layman had a pair of unassisted goals in the first half and Nick Porter had 10 saves for Smithsburg.

Ryan Shesman scored two goals for Catoctin.

JV: Smithsburg, 2-1.

Middletown 3, North Hagerstown 0

Zach Fontenot had two goals and John Remsberg added one as Middletown blanked North Hagerstown at Mike Callas Stadium.

Max Ober made five saves for North (6-2). Shane Falcinelli had four saves in recording the shutout for Middletown.

JV: North, 1-0.


Smithsburg 2, Hedgesville 1

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. — Alexis Andrukat and Elyse Koterwas each scored a goal to lift Smithsburg to a victory over Hedgesville.

Erica Hargreaves and Justina Jordan each had an assist for the Leopards (3-4). Corinne Burk had three saves.

Mandy Awad scored the only goal for Hedgesville.


Lawrenceville 35, Mercersburg Academy 9

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. — Lorenzo Vazquez caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Lee in Mercersburg Academy’s loss to Lawrenceville School in the Mid-Atlantic Prep League.

The Blue Storm’s defense forced a safety in third quarter to complete their scoring.

Ayo Adjibaba had 13 carries for 79 yards for Mercersburg (0-3, 0-2).

Greencastle-Antrim 49, Waynesboro 14

WAYNESBORO, Pa. — Denver Cordell ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns, and Greencastle rolled up 369 yards and seven TDs on the ground to beat Waynesboro (2-3) on Friday night.

Tyler Szaflarski ran for 103 yards and two scores, and Austin Scott added 52 yards and two scores for the Blue Devils (3-2). Scott completed 7 of 9 passes for 97 yards.


McConnellsburg 3, Mercersburg 0

MERCERSBURG, Pa. — Elise Robbins had four kills, three aces and six digs for Mercersburg Academy in a 25-9, 25-19, 25-19 loss to McConnellsburg.

Melody Gomez had five kills and Lizzie Martin had six assists for the Blue Storm (2-5).

Shalom Christian 3, CVCS 0

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Natasha Gibble had 16 kills, nine assists and seven digs to lead Shalom Christian to a 25-18, 25-8, 25-22 Mason Dixon Christian Conference victory over Cumberland Valley Christian.

Ashlyn Blank had seven kills and 21 digs, Tori Yoder had four kills and three blocks, Kristen Blank has 15 assists, Brooke Poe had 13 digs and Karlee Wise added three aces for the Flames.

Williamsport 20, Smithsburg 14

Shepherd 3, Concord 0

ATHENS, W.Va. — Shepherd University swept Concord University (8-10, 2-2) in West Virginia Conference action, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19.

Lauren Gardner had 15 kills with a .536 percentage to pace the Rams (9-6, 3-2). Meg Kenny added eight kills with a .636 percentage. Lauren Jeschelnik had 17 assists and Sara Michael added 16 assists. Trish Leigh had 10 digs.


CVAC races in Canada

PARIS, Ontario — Four runners from Hagerstown’s Cumberland Valley Athletic Club had award-winning finishes Saturday at the Run for the Toad, the largest trail-racing event in Canada.

Cameron Hanlin, 23, of Hagerstown, placed third in the 25K in 1 hour, 33 minutes, 48 seconds.

In the 50K, Andy Mason, 39, of Hagerstown, finished third in 3:41:46, Dan DeWitt, 23, of Frostburg, Md., was eighth in 4:12:10, and Dani Mason, 39, of Hagerstown was the second female in 4:25:57.

Wildcats alumni soccer game postponed to next weekend

The Williamsport High School soccer alumni game scheduled for Saturday has been postponed to next Saturday. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Washington County CARES organization.
