Warriors scratch another goal off their list

HAGERSTOWN — One of the preseason goals of the Boonsboro girls soccer team was to play well against MVAL Antietam competition.

The Warriors took another step toward achieving that goal Thursday night, remaining undefeated in league play with a 4-1 victory over North Hagerstown in the continuation of a game postponed after 24 minutes earlier this season.

“It’s nice to beat the current (Washington) County champs,” said Warriors coach Chris Lantz, “especially after our performance in the counties (this year).”

Holding a 2-1 lead when the game was suspended, Boonsboro struck first Thursday on a goal by Hannah Froehlich before the half, pushing the Warriors’ advantage to 3-1.

“It might have been a little different if we had popped one in,” said Hubs coach Rick Aleshire. “The game might have had a different complexion. But they’re well-coached, and they’re a good ballclub. I knew they were going to bring their ‘A’ game.”

Boonsboro (5-3, 4-0) made it 4-1 on an Abby Duncan goal in the 55th minute, and the Hubs (3-5-1, 0-2-1) failed to mount a charge after that.

Despite the loss, Aleshire remained upbeat.

“People have to realize we’re young,” Aleshire said. “We’re a work in progress. At this juncture of the season, I’m satisfied with where we are.”
