Artists invited to enter Western Maryland Blues Fest poster contest

September 29, 2011

HAGERSTOWN — The hunt for the 2012 Western Maryland Blues Fest poster artist is in full swing. The city of Hagerstown’s Western Maryland Blues Fest committee and the Washington County Arts Council are calling all visual artists to submit their work by Oct. 21.

“We are always blown away by the artwork and ideas that are submitted each year,” said Carl Disque, founder and event chair for the Western Maryland Blues Fest. “We can’t wait to see what is submitted this year, and we encourage all artists to participate.”

Each year, the Blues Fest committee and the arts council find an artist who creates an original work that will be used to advertise for the festival that is held annually in Hagerstown. The winning original artwork is commissioned by the arts council and the city and is seen on posters, T-shirts, programs and other promotional material. The original artwork is also raffled off to help raise funds for the Blues Fest.

“In addition to having their original work featured everywhere on all kinds of promotional materials for the Blues Fest, the artist will also have a chance to exhibit his or her other works in a special gallery show at the arts council in June,” said Mary Anne Burke, arts council executive director. “It’s a great outlet for any artist to share his or her talent with the community.”

Artists who want to be the poster artist are encouraged to submit up to three entries that will be reviewed by the Blues Fest committee and the arts council. Images must be submitted in a JPEG format and files should be labeled: “last name, first name, and title of work.” Artists can email images to gallerymgr@washingtoncountyarts.com and include their full name, address, telephone and email address. Artists can also send a CD of their images, marked with their name to Washington County Arts Council Inc., 14 W. Washington St., Hagerstown, MD 21740

For a copy of the official guidelines and for more information, go to www.blues-fest.org, call the arts council at 301-791-3132 or email gallerymgr@washingtoncountyarts.com.

The 17th annual Western Maryland Blues Fest is scheduled for May 31-June 3, 2012.
