Mail Call - Sept. 28

September 28, 2011

“I’m calling about chickens in town. When I was young, they had chickens.”

— Clear Spring

“This is to the staff of The Herald-Mail. Thanks for putting that in there about the lights on Eastern Boulevard. I attended a funeral there the other night, a viewing, on Wednesday night, and lo and behold, thank goodness for the street- lights. At night it was dark, it was a terrible accident, and they did help. Thanks a lot. Job well done, Herald-Mail.”

— Leitersburg

“Now, why would an air show go on and fly over a grandstand where people are sitting? This is ridiculous. They should stay away from the grandstands.”

— Hagerstown

“Amen and kudos to all the callers who’ve pointed out ... the obvious fact that when you choose to live near an airport, you must expect to have planes flying over. I really dislike the attitude of such ... thoughtless people who choose to move near something; an airport, a farm, a business, even something so minor as a basketball hoop in a neighbor’s driveway, anything they don’t like, and then complain incessantly and try to change it or shut it down. I’m all in favor of disregarding them and their complaints.”

— Frederick, Md.

“I’m just calling about smokers. I know it’s a hard habit to break and everything, but it doesn’t make any sense, when you have stores ... and (restaurants) and all, people smoking right outside the door. Might as well have them smoking inside because by the time you get by them, you already got it on you. I think they should have a designated smoking area. I respect smokers, and like I said, it’s a hard habit to break. ... I want them to respect my fresh air.”

— Berkeley Springs, W.Va.

“I just want to let everyone know, when you steal a 75-cent newspaper out of someone’s box, you are committing a crime. That is a theft. Granted, it’s only 75 cents, but it’s still theft. It’s not yours, and you’re taking it. So please, stop taking my newspaper.”

— South County

“I don’t live in Boonsboro and I don’t own chickens, never have, but I can’t see what the big controversy is. Boonsboro is a rural community. It’s not a town or city like Hagerstown. But I will make one comparison, and the comments about the dogs hit it right on the head of the nail. I live in Hagerstown, and our problem is the dogs. People walk their dogs ... this even happens on the sidewalks. People let their dogs walk along with them, make a mess, and just keep on going. And people are complaining about chickens in people’s backyards? At least they don’t walk them on your property.”

— Hagerstown

“I certainly would rather hear three little chickens clucking than I would all the dogs that I’m surrounded by, that bark all the time. I wish we could have chickens in Hagerstown. I would enjoy it. Three’s enough. Also, I wish they would change the intersection at Edgewood and Howell Road. That certainly is an inconvenience.”

— Hagerstown

“Are you kidding? Each GM UAW member gets a $5,000 signing bonus for their new contract. Didn’t the taxpayers just bail them out of bankruptcy, to the tune of $30 billion? Maybe the bonus money should go to the taxpayers. Unbelievable.”

— Hagerstown

“I am impressed with the placement of two articles in Sunday’s paper. On page A15, the first item, ‘Va. school board sued over display of Ten Commandments.’ Directly beside of it is another article by Billy Graham, which reads, ‘Pray for those who oppose God.’ Those two articles’ placements speak for themselves.”

— Hagerstown

“I’m not sure The Herald-Mail would print this, but along with Congress and our president’s stupid spending, look at all the Hollywood movies that are coming out. They’re so stupid. They don’t even make sense, some of them. Another thing on my mind is clerks who talk to another clerk while trying to wait on you, or a person that’s backing out of a parking space not getting a chance to back out because the other person’s in a big hurry, can’t wait, no patience. Not only on the interstate, but everywhere else, in the stores and everywhere else. What is wrong with the American people? Sunday’s paper has a good one, Pam Robinson put a good letter in.”

— Hancock

“This is to the lady in the large gray SUV, who on Sunday, Sept. 18, tried to run over my little green car, pulling out of Cedar Lawn onto the Western Pike. You showed a case of road rage, and you almost hit me, and then you turned on your bright lights in the middle of the day and just kept coming up as close as you could behind me, and roaring your engines up, and the next time you do that, I will report you to the police.”

— Hagerstown

“This is for the caller who said we don’t need labor unions anymore because there are state and federal laws to protect workers. Well, the only reason we have these laws is because workers stood up together against companies who only care about making money. Things could go back the other way, and the companies will be very happy if the unions get busted. Then we will all be sorry.”

— Hagerstown

“I would like to know why there is no (Gamblers) Anonymous in Hagerstown. And is there a place around that has a (Gamblers) Anonymous? There’s everything else but gambling.”

— Hagerstown
